NEW RELEASE! As part of my 30 day fundraiser for the Medic + Healer Council at Standing Rock (more info below), I've released an album of old, mostly unheard material, a 9 track album called Buried Treasure.

About the fundraiser:

Over the next 30 days (Feb. 13-Mar. 14), 100% of Elder Sister Plum online profits will be donated to the Medic + Healer Council at Standing Rock, an indigenous-led collaborative group coordinating medical and healing supplies, human resources, and other types of medical/healing aid for the NoDAPL resistance camps.

About the album:

This album is a time capsule, a collection of songs written and recorded many years ago, going as far back as Plum's teenage years when she was first experimenting with song writing. The recordings were made in a variety of places and times.

Originally this album was put together to offer as an incentive as part of an Indiegogo fundraising campaign Plum did in 2012, raising funds to record her first full length album, People Like Us. There was only a small handful of people who donated the amount of money required to receive Buried Treasure, so most of these recordings are previously unheard.(https://eldersisterplum.bandcamp.com/album/people-like-us).

It is now being released in 2017 as part of a 30 day fundraiser Plum is doing, where 100% of her online sales will be donated to the Medic + Healer Council at Standing Rock. This is an indigenous-led collaborative group coordinating medical and healing supplies, human resources, and other types of medical/healing aid for the NoDAPL resistance camps. The fundraiser is taking place between Feb. 13 - Mar. 14.

How does one push themselves to finish production of their full length album? Apparently by releasing a bunch of smaller EPs! I present to you, dear friends: Living Rooms. A small collection of recordings made in various living rooms, in different times and different places. Please have a listen and share around.

I started recording an album. Then I recorded another album to distract me from that. Please share and enjoy.

Since I've been busy mixing the album, I figured I'd post an old recording of a favourite cover of mine. The one and only "Lay Low", by Shovels & Rope. If there was ever a song that I felt was truly written for/about my tender heart, it would be this one. And I know many people who feel the same way. This recording was done in a friend's kitchen in Toronto, right before I packed up and left for the West again. Enjoy.

Happy New Year darlings! I'm happy to announce my first show of the year, coming up this Saturday the 9th, with two fabulous musical acts: The Tin Sea and Combustion Lente.

More deets on my shows page.

After an intense drought this summer, we're finally being replenished by beautiful, familiar rainfall! Today we even got a bout of hail. Nothing quite like the sound of frozen rain bouncing off of rooftops :) The perfect day to get started on mixing the new album.

The recording of Elder Sister Plum's third album has officially begun. I spent the last two days recording in a secret cabin with Vic Horvath, and I must say it was a magical experience. Here are a few snapshots of the process. More to come!

August 14th, '15

Hello folks,

The news feed has been rather silent lately, but believe me that's a good sign, meaning i've been damn busy. On top of continuing to write and playing lots of Elder Sister Plum gigs around Victoria, I've also been jamming and gigging in a few other projects. I'm happy to announce that I am one fifth of a badass all lady Country Doo-wop band called The Half Moon Shine; one half of a duo called Dead Ends, which is a collaboration between myself and the incredibly talented Ships In The Night; and I've been writing, jamming and recording with the indelible and prolific Vic Horvath. I'm also in the planning stages of recording my next album, with recording sessions starting mid August. Vic is going to be co-producing and co-engineering this album with me as well, so very exciting things to come!

It's friday night. It's Beltane. This is what I'm up to.

Well folks, it sure has been a while since any updates happened here. I've been busy learning about organic farming. Now in the event of the apocalypse I can offer to play soothing music as well as grow delicious food. In the mean time, enjoy this video I made the last time I was in Comox:

A song by Waylon Jennings, "I'm A Long Way From Home", sung by Elder Sister Plum and The Sun Harmonic. Performed in the basement of The Townhouse the night before leaving on their East Coast Tour.

May 15th, '14

Now that i'm back in Toronto and Kaleb and I can really put our heads together, all things #eastcoasttour are starting to come together! Here are a few little tidbits to get excited about in the meantime:

Kaleb and I talked on the phone with 107.3 Local FM from Saint John, NB, for a pre-tour interview yesterday. It will air today here (http://localfm.ca/) at 6/7PM AST. (That's 2pm for you west coast lovelies). Have a listen!

Also, Music City North heard I was back in town and invited me to headline their upcoming show at Graffiti's Bar and Grill this Monday the 19th! I'll be back on stage with the beautiful Fanette (she also performed at the last show I played in Toronto last fall) and a bunch of other awesome acts. Check out the details on my Shows page, or on the Facebook event.

April 23rd, '14

It's official: My good friend The Sun Harmonic (Kaleb Hikele) and myself are going on tour this spring! We'll be driving a baby blue minivan across The Maritimes and Ontario, playing shows, busking and taking in the sights and sounds of the beautiful East Coast. Have a look at the poster and see if we're coming to a town near you!

Spent a rainy Thursday drinking whiskey and recording a new tune. I have definitely fallen in love with garageband pre-set drum loops. Dang they're fun. The new song, entitled Ode To A Restless Heart (Sing An Honour Song) will be available on my soundcloud as a free download until Sunday night. Tell your friends!

Long time no newsfeed update. Life has been a whirlwind of changes in the last couple of months. I moved from Toronto, ON back to Victoria, BC with a visit to Dawson, YK and the Comox Valley in between. I'm so happy to report that I've been writing and performing a ton of music since being back in Victoria, and have applied to a huge pile of folk festivals for summer 2014.

Two shows coming up that i'm very excited for, tomorrow night i'm headlining YoUnlimited's first ever Women and Song event (pre-sale tickets here). There will be a handful of other amazing local female artists gracing the stage, and it's definitely something you're going to want to come out and support. Show starts tomorrow night (Jan. 24th) at 7pm. Then on February 8th i'm playing a few songs at a cabaret/variety show style even called Forbidden Fruit: Showcase of the Extraordinary. I have a surprise up my sleeve for one of the songs that I can't wait to share with everyone! There is going to a ton of awesome entertainment that night, from puppetry to burlesque to bluegrass. You don't wanna miss this. (See 'Shows' page for more details on both performances)

Lastly, I spent our first sunny afternoon in quite a while locked in my bedroom with only my fairy lights on, writing and recording a cover of Feist's 'Cicadas and Gulls'. I had enough creative magic pumping through me to decide to make a music video right after finishing recording the demo. Take a look on my youtube channel, or have a listen on my soundcloud.

That's all she wrote.

October  29th, '13

It's been a while since the last update. Sometimes life takes over and doesn't leave room for updating the old news feed. So I find myself back on Vancouver Island in the beautiful Comox Valley, my old stompin grounds. A bit of a severe transition coming from Toronto, but peaceful and calming now that i'm back in the right mind space. On Nov. 8th i'm up to Dawson City, YK (hopefully I can squeeze in a performance, definitely get in some jams), and by the end of November i'll be back in Victoria, BC! Hopefully lots of shows to come there.

More radio news: Nice surprise today checking the ear-shot charts, i'm still spinning, now in Kamloops. I hit #1 on CFBX 92.5 Folk/Roots/Blues chart, and #4 on their overall Top 30! Thanks Kamloops community radio.

I've had a lot of free time since I've been in Comox, which luckily has resulted in some uninterrupted creative fun times. Check out this garageband demo I made of a cover by AWOLNATION called Sail. I was feeling extra inspired, so I tried my hand at putting together a little music video for it. Enjoy!

Radio News!  'People Like Us' has been getting a ton of spins on Canadian Community/College/Independent Radio in the past few weeks, as reflected on the Earshot charts

Highlights from the last week include reaching #2 in Kingston's 101.9 Folk/Roots/Blues category; #7 on Earshot's National Folk/Roots/Blues chart; and #26 on Earshot's National Overall Top 50.

Found a couple more reviews last night. Feels good to get some press! Particularly excited to get a review from Bob Mersereau, a well known music blogger and reviewer who authors the Top 100 Canadian Singles and Top 100 Canadian Albums. It's one of the more stranger sounding reviews I've read, the word "Amish" appears more than once, but ultimately it's very positive. Thanks Bob! And I'm happy to have been featured on music blog Birds Of Canada from The Fraser Valley, near my old stompin grounds in B.C. Nice to see the sounds spreading.

Last but not least, come on out tonight to Graffiti's to catch my 11:30 set as part of Music City North's Kensington Market Music Festival. For those of you who missed the CD release show on Sunday, here's a chance to soak in some sweet serenades and pirate sing alongs in a more intimate setting.

August 18th, '13

Excited for the Toronto CD release show tonight at The Cameron House! Can't wait to get back on stage with Nika Smith and The Sun Harmonic. Doors at 8:30, music at 9. See you there folks!

Side note:

My wonderful big brother started a music blog recently. He's always my number one go to guy for new music. And being the awesome sibling that he is, he featured my album People Like Us. Keep checking out his blog for more awesome sounds.

August 4th, '13

Thank you Kitchener (and lovely Nika Smith) for a delightful house show/bbq/fire/soccer game! It was great to meet so many new folks and hear some new music, and so wonderful to have all the kids joining in with tambourines and shakers. Those little ones had pretty awesome rhythm. I can't wait to go back for another show!

'People Like Us' received a great review from InRetro Magazines website!

"It's been seven years in the making, but storytelling music can take a while - if you take the time to live the stories first . Self described as a musical autobiography, Tanya Semple's People Like Us  is a rainy-day-feel collection of songs that hits you in just the right place when feeling reflective and open to experiencing new music."

Toronto CD release show has been announced! Join me in the back room of The Cameron House on Sunday August 18th for a lovely night of sweet 'ol folk music. I'm happy to say some of my old musical buddies, Nika Smith and The Sun Harmonic, will be sharing the stage that night. Doors at 9, music at 9:30. $10 cover, includes a copy of 'People Like Us' (nobody turned away).

Well Montreal, you wooed me hard! That was one of the warmest most loving experiences I've had in a long time. Such a wonderful crowd, so many beautiful faces. I can't help but be a suck about the whole thing. Seeing everyone made me so happy! Thank you for being wonderful.

 July 10th, '13

Today is the official release of 'People Like Us'!  The album is available as a CD or digital download. Read the description of the album and have a look through the 'People Like Us' photo shoot below.

Elder Sister Plum presents her first full-length studio album, 'People Like Us'. Composed of all original songs written over the past seven years, Tanya Semple considers this record to be her musical autobiography. You will hear wistful melancholy ballads followed by groovy toe-tapping tunes, moving into somber and hair-raising stories of sailors lost at sea.

Starting out as solo acoustic folk songs, her music began to take on a life of it's own as she explored new instruments in the studio, collaborating with long time friend and musical companion, The Sun Harmonic (Kaleb Hikele).

The two Canadian musicians worked together on the performance and creation of an album that ranges in sound and emotion. Plum was thrilled to have Gary Simkins come by the studio to add some sweetness to four of the songs with his cello, bringing even richer textures to the folky craft.

Recorded in the spring of 2013 at The Townhouse Recording Facility & Sound Studio in Toronto, 'People Like Us' will enchant and excite listeners, being both a relatable and escapist experience. Elder Sister Plum would like to thank you for listening to her stories.

First of all, welcome to my new website! I owe my lovely partner Dana a lot of credit for helping get this site together. Take a look around, have a listen to the tunes, enjoy yourselves.

Secondly: We did it! In 30 days all of you wonderful people out there helped me raise $1540 to record my first full length album, 'People Like Us'! It's been such a heart warming experience to have received so much support, monetary and otherwise, from my community. I'll have the CD's in hand just in time for the Montreal CD release show on Thursday July 11th at Le Cagibi. I won't start sending out packages with CD's, patches and letters until after the show. Stay tuned for CD release show dates in Toronto.
